Mathematics

In Nursery we have:

  • Maths skills taught during small and large group sessions, including lots of counting, number rhyme and stories
  • Key worker system enables staff to be focused on individual’s needs within their group of children and planning reflects this
  • Opportunities for children to develop their maths skills built into the continuous provision planning e.g. role play, construction, malleable etc.
  • Staff develop children’s skills and language as they present, during free flow sessions

 

In Reception we have:

  • a whole class maths session 4 days per week, includes counting
  • a number songs session everyday
  • every child works with an adult every day completing a maths task in small mixed ability groups
  • Space Mission targets - individuals seen across the week to work on specific targets, recorded in Space Mission booklets
  • opportunities for children to develop their maths skills built into the continuous provision planning e.g. role play, construction, malleable etc.
  • staff develop children's skills and language as they present, during free flow sessions (every afternoon), story times etc.

Counting, Number and Calculation

In Years 1 to 6, pupils are given daily practice of counting and mental and written arithmetic skills in order to keep calculation skills fresh. This helps children to develop and maintain fluency in both written and mental calculations.
