  • East Barnby Day 4

    Thu 29 Feb 2024

Our last full day at East Barnby was another cold, but dry one.

Following another big breakfast, we headed out on the mini buses to Maybeck for an adventure walk through the woods.  We played Pooh-sticks and walked up to the waterfall at Falling Foss.  We built shelters, we made fires using a flint and steel and had lunch in a cave.  Highlight of the day was the teamwork involved in den building.  They looked so good, one group tried to sell theirs for £7,000!

Back at the centre, we enjoyed pizza for tea and set about the huge task of packing our cases, ready for the return to school tomorrow.  Orienteering is on the agenda tomorrow morning and following lunch, we'll set off for home.  Get those washing machines ready!!!

  • East Barnby Day 3

    Wed 28 Feb 2024

Wednesday has been a busy and tiring, but fun filled day, spent mostly on the water!

Following breakfast, we sorted out the equipment that was needed for the day.  Helmets, paddles and life jackets were all collected along with new waterproofs for those who'd been particularly muddy yesterday.  Canoes were loaded onto the trailers and off we set for the River Esk at Ruswarp.

Once at Ruswarp, we unloaded the trailers, lashed the boats together and set off down the Esk.  After we'd negotiated the weir, we paddled towards Whitby, stopping at the island under the bridge at Ruswarp for lunch.  Following lunch, we headed on the final leg of our trip, playing some games (lots of splashing involved!) and spotting shipwrecks and an alpaca or two, amongst other things. Finally, we arrived into the harbour at Whitby, pretty tired, fairly wet, but very happy!

After packing up the canoes and kit, we headed back to East Barnby where we finished the activities off with a sledging session on the dry ski slope. Tea was demolished and dorms tidied, before games and a chill out time in the centre.

Highlights of the day have been not only the chance to paddle into Whitby, but the way everyone has worked together, supported each other and done a great job, even when the going got tough!  We're heading to bed now, looking forward to a good sleep before an adventure day in the woods tomorrow.

    Good night everyone!!!

  • East Barnby Day 2

    Tue 27 Feb 2024

After a good sleep, a breakfast of cereal, fruit juice, sausages, eggs and tomatoes was enjoyed, before setting off for a busy day.  A trip to Runswick Bay involved climbing down to the seashore to search for the creatures who live there. Crabs, fish and a scorpion fish were all found, along with plenty of seaweed, seashells and fossils.  We peered into the caves along the shoreline and had lots of fun.

After lunch and a short drive, we set off to tackle Rosebery Topping. The climb up always provides a challenge, but this was approached with enthusiasm and energy and despite the rain that blew in, everyone did a great job. The shelters we found came in useful too!

On return to the centre, a tea of either chicken curry or burgers was devoured, and a chilled-out evening in the games room and lounge area provided an opportunity to chill and spend time with friends.

As we settle down for the night, we're looking forward to a day out canoeing on the River Esk.  And a touch more rain.  Good night from East Barnby!!!

  • East Barnby Update

    Mon 26 Feb 2024

After a good journey up to East Barnby, we got sorted in the dormitories, kitted out with waterproofs and met the centre staff we'll be working with this week. Following lunch, we headed out in the minibuses to Goathland for a beck scramble in West Beck.  Everyone got fully involved, pushed and challenged themselves to the max and, of course, got very wet!  The teamwork was amazing and demonstrated what a brilliant group we've got with us this week.  Everyone enjoyed tea, which was followed by a tidy up in the dorms and then a visit to the tuckshop.  We then took part in the mini-olympics, before finishing with a hot chocolate and back to the bunks for settling down time.  Everyone enjoyed the day and we're all looking forward to the activities tomorrow.  A brilliant start to what promises to be a brilliant week!
