Welcome to Barrowcliff School

February Spring Term 2 2014 Newsletter

Dear Reader

Already half way through the Academic year!

Thank you for all those who contributed to our charity collection on non-uniform day on 14th February.  We raised £110 to go towards the British Legion, our Charity of the Year.

Our Assembly on Monday 24th February was centred on the British Legion. The children were shown the wrist bands which we are selling for £1 in aid of the charity. If children wish to wear a band they can be purchased from the school office.  (Only British Legion or Help the Heroes bands may be worn).

Old Wellington Boots

We would be grateful if you could donate any old wellington boots in children’s sizes.  We will be able to make use of them in outdoor activities.

Cold Weather

Please remember coats, hats and gloves every day.

Egypt

We are continuing with our efforts to turn the school in a Museum, which will end with an open Day for parents to visit your children’s classrooms.

We were exceptionally lucky in KS2 to have a lecture by Professor Joann Fletcher. Thank you to Mrs Wright for arranging this wonderful opportunity for the children to listen to such an expert in their field.

Y5 Spring Production

The Y5 children are currently working hard rehearsing their production for Spring.  The title of the production is The Pyramid and we will be sending out further details nearer the time.

Coastival

Thank you to all the children who gave up their Friday night at the end of half term to sing at the Coastival event – it was extremely cold!  Also a big thank you to Mr Johnson, Mr Prince, Mr Cook, Mrs Pacey, Mrs Boyes, Mrs Vickerman and Mrs Wright who gave many hours in teaching the songs.

PE Kit/Uniform

Can we remind all parents that PE kit should be brought into school EVERY Monday and taken home on Friday?

We are always short of sports kit in school.  If you have any old football boots, shin pads, trainers, shorts etc. we would be very grateful if you could bring them into school.

We would also be grateful for swimwear, towels etc. now that we are regularly taking the Y5 pupils swimming.

We would ask that all pupils wear the correct items of school uniform.  School jumpers/cardigans are available to purchase from the school office.

Long hair should be tied up/back.

Thank you.

Absence for Vomiting

Please be aware that if your child is absent because of vomiting,  he/she must have been clear for 48 hours before returning to school.

Emergency Contact Details

Can we please remind all parents to inform the school office of any changes to Emergency Contact Information as soon as possible? It is very important that we are able to contact parents quickly in the case of an emergency.

KS2 SATS Tests

A reminder that Y6 children will be involved in KS2 SATs Tests from 12th – 16th May 2014.

Y5 Swimming

As you are aware, we are now taking Y5 children to Scarborough Indoor pool.  The sessions are going exceptionally well.

School Start Times

Can we remind all parents of the school start times?

KS1      Classes start at 8.55 a.m.

KS2      Classes start at 8.50 a.m.

Can you please ensure that your child/children arrive at school promptly? The class with the best attendance for the week is presented with the Attendance Cup in the Award Assembly every Friday.

Thank you for your help.

Jewellery

Can we remind all parents that the only items of jewellery allowed to be worn for school are small stud earrings.  These must be removed for sport or covered with tape.

Please ensure that tape is provided.

Box Tops

Please be aware that we are still collecting the Box Top vouchers from Nestle cereal boxes. A collection box will be available on the main Reception Desk.

Thank you.

Headlice

Can we ask parents to check their child/children on a regular basis for headlice. Please help us to stop head lice becoming a major problem in school.

World Book Day

Just to remind you that we will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 6th March.

Once again we will be hosting a Book Stall on the Junior playground at the end of the day.  The children will be given £1.00 book tokens, which they will be able to exchange for one of the specially printed books. Of course, if you are able to get into town we would encourage you to do so.  This would enable the children to experience a bookshop.

As usual, children can dress up as a favourite book character.

Library Club

Just a reminder that the school library is open every Tuesday from 3.15 p.m. to 3.45 p.m. You are welcome to come and browse the books with your children.

Parents’ Consultation Evenings

These will take place on Monday 10th March from 5.30 p.m. – 7.30 p.m. and Wednesday 12th March from 3.30 p.m. – 5.30 p.m.

 School Website

We would remind all parents that the school website is updated on a regular basis with information relating to all aspects of school life. www.barrowcliff.n-yorks.sch.uk.

We would also draw your attention to the following rules for safe internet use.  Please ensure that your child is aware of the points set out.

  • Ask a grown up’s permission before you connect to the Internet.  Only use the Internet if there are grow-ups nearby.
  • NEVER give out personal information, such as your real name, address, school name or telephone number.
  • NEVER send a picture of yourself to strangers.
  • NEVER arrange to meet someone you have “met” on the Internet.
  • DON’T fill out forms online – if a site asks you to log in or register by typing your name or email address, ask permission from a grown-up first.

If you receive an email from someone you don’t know, tell a grown-up. DON’T reply to it.

Easter Egg Assembly

Once again, we are asking children to bring their decorated eggs to school where they form a wonderful display as part of assembly. This will be held on Friday 4th April at 10.00 a.m. Unfortunately, due to lack of space it will not be possible for parents to attend the assembly. The hall will be open from 8.30 a.m. for children and parents to deliver decorated eggs.  The children will go into class at the normal time but the hall will remain open until 9.30 a.m. for parents to inspect the entries. The hall will then be closed for judging!!

End of Term

School will close for end of term at 2.30 p.m. on Friday 4th April.  Casual clothes and 50p donation to school charity.
