Welcome to Barrowcliff School

June Summer Term 2 Newsletter 2013

Dear Reader

With effect from September 2013, the Government are amending the current regulations regarding holidays in term time.

The amendment will remove reference to family holidays and extended leave from school and the threshold of 10 days.

This means that from September 2013, Headteachers in England will no longer be able to grant any leave of absence during term time for family holidays or other reasons.  Only in “special circumstances” will a Headteacher be able to grant leave.  We are not aware of the definition of “special circumstances”.

I have already received a few requests for holiday absence from school for the very beginning of the Autumn term 2013.  I see no reason why these absences cannot be authorised as they were already in the system before this announcement.  Please note, however, that if you are planning a holiday in the next school year, we will no longer be able to authorise it.

We will be discussing this at our next Governors’ Meeting and I will keep you informed of any further guidance received, especially with regard to the phrase “special circumstances”.

May I also remind you that medical and dental appointments should be organised for after school and during the holidays as much as possible.

Library

May we remind you that the School Library is open every Tuesday from 3.15 p.m.?   Please feel free to browse and choose a book with your child.

Get Caught Reading

The children are enjoying taking part in this scheme.  Please encourage your child to read at home and work towards winning exciting prizes.

PE Kit/Uniform

Can we remind all parents that PE kit should be brought into school EVERY Monday and taken home on Friday?

We are always short of sports kit in school.  If you have any old football boots, shin pads, trainers, shorts etc. we would be very grateful if you could bring them into school.

We would also be grateful for swimwear, towels etc. now that we are regularly taking the Y5 pupils swimming.

We would ask that all pupils wear the correct items of school uniform.  School jumpers/cardigans are available to purchase from the school office.

Long hair should be tied up/back.

Thank you.

Absence for Vomiting

Please be aware that if your child is absent because of vomiting,  he/she must have been clear for 48 hours before returning to school.

Emergency Contact Details

Can we please remind all parents to inform the school office of any changes to Emergency Contact Information as soon as possible?

It is very important that we are able to contact parents quickly in the case of an emergency.

Theatre Visit to School

There will be a performance of the BFG on Wednesday 10th July – the whole school will be watching!

Y6 Swimming

Y6 children have completed their swimming sessions on Tuesday mornings.

We are now taking Y5 children to Scarborough Indoor pool.  The sessions are going exceptionally well.

School Start Times

Can we remind all parents of the school start times?

KS1      Classes start at 8.55 a.m.

KS2      Classes start at 8.50 a.m.

Can you please ensure that your child/children arrive at school promptly?

The class with the best attendance for the week is presented with the Attendance Cup in the Award Assembly every Friday.

Thank you for your help.

Jewellery

Can we remind all parents that the only items of jewellery allowed to be worn for school are small stud earrings.  These must be removed for sport or covered with tape.

Please ensure that tape is provided.

Box Tops

Please be aware that we are still collecting the Box Top vouchers from Nestle cereal boxes. A collection box will be available on the main Reception Desk.

Thank you

Headlice

Can we ask parents to check their child/children on a regular basis for headlice. Please help us to stop head lice becoming a major problem in school.

Barrowcliff Buddies (FOBS)

Our thanks to the Barrowcliff Buddies for the purchase of the playground equipment in KS1.  I am sure you will agree that the Boat and the House are
