March Spring Term 2 Newsletter 2013

Dear Reader

World Book Day

Thursday 7th March 2013

To celebrate this year, once again we will be hosting a Book Stall on the Junior playground at the end of the day.  The children will be able to exchange their £1.00 book tokens for one of the specially printed books. Of course, if you are able to get into town we would encourage you to do so.  This would enable the children to experience a book shop.

As usual, children can dress up as a favourite book character.

Your children may have told you that school staff spent an evening at Waterstones and bought a new set of books for each classroom.  We have also created new “book areas” in the classrooms.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed these new books, with some children reading 3 or 4 novels a week!

Barrowcliff Buddies have kindly bought £5,000 worth of Guided and Independent reading books for the school.

As you may have guessed, Reading is a HUGE focus for the school and we hope you support us in this.  Any opportunity you have for sharing a book, comic, even the back of a cereal box, can develop the children’s understanding and love of reading.

Parents’ Consultation Evenings

These will take place on Monday 18th March from 5.30 p.m. – 7.30 p.m. and Wednesday 20th March from 3.30 p.m. – 5.30 p.m.

Further details will be sent out in due course.

PE Kit

We are always short of sports kit in school.  If you have any old football boots, shin pads, trainers, shorts etc. we would be very grateful if you could bring them into school. We would also be grateful for swimwear, towels etc. now that we are regularly taking the Y6 pupils swimming.

Thank you.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2013

Once again, we are collecting vouchers!

The collection box is in its usual place on the main Reception Desk and we are hoping to collect even more vouchers this year.  Please let family and friends know so that they can help as well!

Absence for Vomiting

Please be aware that if your child is absent because of vomiting,  he/she must have been clear for 48 hours before returning to school.

Emergency Contact Details

Can we please remind all parents to inform the school office of any changes to Emergency Contact Information as soon as possible. It is very important that we are able to contact parents quickly in the case of an emergency.

KS1 Playground

Thank you for your co-operation during the implementation of the new system in the mornings. After a few teething problems things now seem to be running smoothly.  This has enabled us to make a prompt start to the school day, engaging the children in their early morning tasks. As you will have noticed, a fence has been erected to enclose the grass areas.  This will become an outdoor classroom space for KS1 to extend their learning experiences and enhance the current provision.

Y6 Swimming

Currently all Y6 children are being taken swimming on Tuesday mornings.  We are now using Scarborough Indoor pool.  The sessions are going exceptionally well. We hope to extend swimming sessions to other year groups soon.

The Big Sing

The school choir joined over 900 other children on Friday 15th February to take part in a regional singing event held at The Spa. Mrs Wright said the event was “inspiring” and our children were wonderful ambassadors for the school.

Alien Day

As I am sure you are aware, the school has been taking care of an Alien Egg!

Through NISMAM we have been receiving instructions on how to care fot the egg and research its origins.

On  Friday 15th March we are going to hold an Alien Day.

This will coincide with Comic Relief Day so dressing up is welcome! We are expecting lots of Aliens, Star Wars characters, Astronauts etc!  We will obviously be taking part in fund raising for Comic Relief so donations for dressing up will be appreciated.

Barrowcliff Buddies

Many thanks to the ladies of Barrowciff Buddies for organising the recent St.Valentine’s Disco.  Approximately £300 was raised for school funds.

Watch out for future events!

KS2 SATS Tests

Please be aware that Y6 children will be involved in KS2 SATS Tests from 13th – 16th May 2013. We would be grateful if you do not arrange family holidays during this important time.

School Start Times

Can we remind all parents of the school start times.

KS1      Classes start at 8.55 a.m.

KS2      Classes start at 8.50 a.m.

Can you please ensure that your child/children arrive at school promptly.  This is one of the areas that will be examined during an OfSted inspection and we obviously want to display as positive a situation as possible.

Thank you for your help.

Can we remind all parents that the only items of jewellery allowed to be worn for school are small stud earrings.  These must be removed for sport or covered with tape. Please ensure that tape is provided.

Box Tops

Please be aware that we are still collecting the Box Top vouchers from Nestle cereal boxes. A collection box will be available on the main Reception Desk.

Thank you.

Fire Fighters’ Charity

We are distributing collection bags on behalf of the Fire Fighters’ Charity. This is your chance to get rid of all your unwanted clothing, paired shoes, handbags and bed linen. All bags filled will help to raise funds for the Fire Fighters as well as the school. Please ensure that donations are returned to school by 9.00 a.m. on Thursday 7th March 2013.

Thank you.

Can we ask parents to check their child/children on a regular basis for headlice.

Please help us to stop headlice becoming a major problem in school.

Easter Egg Competition

As we did last year we would like all our children, from Nursery to Y6, to bring in decorated eggs to form a display in assembly. The assembly will be held on Thursday 28th March at 10.15 a.m.  Unfortunately, due to lack of space it will not be possible for parents to attend the assembly. The hall will be open from 8.45 a.m. for children and parents to deliver decorated eggs.  Children will go into class at the normal time but the hall will remain open until 9.30 a.m. for parents to inspect the entries.  The hall will then be closed for judging!!

There will be a small prize for each class winner.  Every entry will receive a small gift as a thank you for the hard work and effort put in at home.  There will be a table in the hall for any parent entries – with a prize of course! I will talk to the children about the egg assembly so that they all know what to do.

Year 5 Production

This year the Y5 children will be presenting their production of Dick Whittington on Wednesday 27th March.  There will be two performances at

2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.

Further details to follow.

End of Term

School closes for Easter holidays at 2.30 p.m. on THURSDAY 28TH MARCH.

School re-opens at 8.50 a.m. on MONDAY 15th APRIL
