I would like to welcome you back to the new school year at Barrowcliff School. Firstly, a welcome back to our existing students and their parents, who all look refreshed and ready for another exciting term. Secondly, to those new families who are joining the school, I hope you will soon settle in and feel a member of the “Barrowcliff Family”. It has been lovely to hear about all the holiday news, so many exciting adventures!
New Staff Members
I am sure you would like to join me in welcoming 2 new members of our teaching staff. Mr Barber, Class 7 and Miss Wilson, Class 8.
As a result of the success of awarding the Attendance Cup and cakes during the Friday Assembly, we do intend to continue with this system. We will also be keeping a record of Attendance Scores for each class on a display board in the Hall corridor.
Whole School Theme
‘Tell me a Story’ Children in KS1 and 2 will be working on Tell me a Story, which focuses mainly on a book by Fiona French, ‘Snow White in New York’. This is a twist on the original story and is set in 1930’s New York.
The children will be looking at the music, fashion and events of the period. As part of this, during week commencing 7th October the children will be concocting their own cocktails! We will also be holding a 1920’s/1930’s themed dressing up day on Friday 11th October. PLEASE DO NOT WORRY!! This could be party frocks for the girls and shirts and ties, with school trousers, for the boys. Please do not go to any expense but these days really do help bring the curriculum alive for the children. If you are stuck for ideas please speak to Mr Johnson or your child’s class teacher.
Author of the Term
This term’s featured author will be Shirley Hughes.
The first Book Fair of the year will take place on Thursday 19th September – more details for follow regarding class timetable etc.

In order that the whole school is in-line with the Juniors, and to help in the fight against “head lice”, ALL children with long hair MUST have it tied back when in school. Can we please remind all parents to be aware of the problem of head lice and ensure that you check your child/children on a regular basis. This is a problem that can affect the whole school. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Get Caught Reading & Reading at Home
With the success of Get Caught Reading last term we will continue to award tickets to the children when they are “caught reading” during the school day, especially during their free time. The tickets are then collected and entered into the Friday draw. As many of you already hear your children read at home, you may have noticed the new Reading Records and the 'tips' sheet. We really appreciate the time you give and I am sure you enjoy hearing the progress your child makes. You may have noticed that we are awarding books for each 20 books read in Years 1-4 and for each 10 books read in Years 5 & 6.
New Playground Equipment
I am sure you will have noticed the new equipment in the KS1 playground. This has all been funded with money raised by Barrowcliff Buddies (formerly FOBS) over a number of years. The children are already having great fun using the equipment. We would ask for your co-operation regarding health & safety by ensuring that your children do not play on the equipment prior to school. Thank you.
A reminder that KS2 children can purchase fruit on a daily basis. All items are 20p.

Freddie Spivey won the competition to name the new school House Teams, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme.
Your child will be put into his/her ‘House’ and will remain in it for the duration of their time at Barrowcliff. They will be able to earn points for various activities, which will count towards the Weekly Cup. In addition we will be holding various inter-house competitions during the year.
Bikes & Scooters
Please be aware that bikes or scooters are not allowed to be ridden on school premises for Health & Safety reasons. Please make sure that children are supervised closely and not allowed to ride too quickly. It can really hurt
if they crash into somebody, as has happened to one of our parents in the past. Bikes are allowed to be ridden to school ONLY when your child has passed the Bikeability Course.

Can we remind parents that all school meals must be paid for in the week that they are taken. Meals can be paid for daily. We do not enforce a rule of paying for meals on a weekly basis. School meals are £2.10 per day (£1.60 for Nursery). The Admin staff will continue to take steps to ensure that meal arrears do not become a problem for parents and school. Packed lunches will be required until any arrears are cleared. We would ask for you co-operation, however, in order to keep payments up to date. Copies of the current menus for school meals and Cold Café are attached.

Would parents please be advised that for Health & Safety reasons, the Adventure Playground in the KS2 playground is NOT to be used by children at the beginning of the school day. It is important that children are supervised while using the playground and this can not be guaranteed at this time of day.
The gates will be locked and the area must not be accessed by climbing the fence. We will inform the children via their Class Teachers but would ask for your co-operation in reinforcing the message from home.
