All Literacy is founded on the ability to read well. We operate a book banding reading system using a variety of different schemes and genres. We firmly believe that reading should be an enjoyable experience. In Foundation we develop our first partnerships with parents and other adults - we want children to see that reading isn't just something that happens at school, but is part of everyday life. In school, we provide a rich collection of books and reading resources. Children bring books home. We follow the 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme up until Year 4. Years 5 and 6 follow the North Yorkshire Spelling Programme. As phonic and word skills develop, children move on from reading exclusively as individuals to reading in guided groups then as independent readers. We see public libraries as a great place for children to widen their reading experience. Visits are made to Scalby Library and we provide a computerised library of our own.
Rich reading and speaking experiences are the starting points for writing. We currently teach the cursive 'Joinit' font throughout the school. Children learn to write for many different purposes, including their own, and are taught the writing styles of different genres. Children are set challenging targets by their teachers to develop their skills, and focused marking lets them know when they are being successful. All writing is meaningful , has a real purpose and is cross-curricular linking it to topic work . Computing enhances the English curriculum.
