Welcome to the Barrowcliff School website. We are proud to be an Ofsted GOOD school.

Reading & Writing

Story time

Sharing stories is an important part of learning to read and we hope you are enjoying the story books we sent home with the children. Take time to talk about what is happening in the story and where the story takes place, use funny voices for the different characters and talk about whether they are goodies or baddies. Could you think of a different ending for the story or change the characters?

Take a look at these websites that are offering free access to e books, which can be read on a tablet/phone or PC, so that you don't run out of new stories to read.

Films for children

There are three, short Speed Sounds lessons for children to watch at home every weekday on the YouTube channel.

Each lesson is ten minutes long and available for 24 hours.

Repeats of lessons streamed up until Friday 3rd April will be shown during the Easter holidays (excluding Bank Holidays).

    • Set 1 Speed Sounds 9.30 am  - for children in Nursery and Reception and children who are new to English. These focus on single letter sounds and how they can be used to read and spell simple words. Children should be confident at reading words using single letter sounds before moving onto learning Special Friends ch, sh, th, qu, nk, ng (two letters making one sound).

    • Set 2 Speed Sounds 10.00 am - for children in Reception that can read Set 1 Speed Sounds and for children in Year 1 and 2.  These lessons are suitable for children who can confidently read words like drip, think, wish, sing, chip, and teaches them more Special Friends like ay, ee, oo, igh.

    • Set 3 Speed Sounds 10.30 am - for children in Year 1 and 2 that can read Set 2 Speed Sounds

After the Easter holidays, we will:

  • Continue Sets 1, 2 and 3 Speed Sounds lessons

  • Add lessons to help children read words with Set 1 Speed Sounds and spell words with Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds

Don't worry if you miss a lesson. Once each set has been shown, we will replay one a day from each set.
