Free School Meals

Free School Meals and Pupil Premium - How To Apply

Many of our families could get Free School Meals but do not claim for them; your child may be entitled to Free School Meals if you as the parent are in receipt of any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Jobseekers' Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit

Why claim?

  • Save hundreds of pounds each year
  • Extra funding for the school in the form of Pupil Premium
  • It’s your entitlement
  • No downside
  • Other pupils and parents will not know you are claiming

If you think your family may be eligible to claim, you can apply online by clicking here

This is the quickest and easiest way to check your eligibility.  NYCC do not backdate claims.

Alternatively, you can complete a paper form at the school office and this will be sent to NYCC on your behalf.  This takes a while longer.

Alternatively you can contact the school office on 01723 351767 or email admin@barrowcliff.n-yorks.sch.uk and we will send a paper copy to you.  The office can submit signed forms to NYCC on your behalf, please don't be afraid to ask.

If your child is in reception, year one or year two they are automatically entitled to a free school meal. Parents who are on benefits and meet the above criteria are still encouraged to apply as their child will receive pupil premium funding. This benefits the school, could entitle you to extra help such as trip subsidies, and helps increase your child's attainment.

During the current roll out of Universal Credit if your child is approved for free school meals they will gain 'transitional protection' until at least March 2022.  At the end of the Universal Credit roll out period, any pupil who no longer meets the eligibility criteria will continue to receive free school meals until the end of their current phase of education.  This means that even if your income increases and you no longer meet the eligibility criteria, your child/ren will continue to be eligible for free school meals until they leave Barrowcliff School.
